Enrollment and Fees

What Will This Cost?:

You will need to register for the sessions you are signing up for (see below) and these will each have the normal tuition fees (2 credit hours each for Hydrogeology, Coastal, Field Geophysics and Geologic Mapping). In addition, you will need to provide $250 per session that you are signing up for. That is: $250 for one session, $500 for two sessions, $750 for three sessions, $1000 for four sessions. This money is NOT refundable and will be used to cover costs of running the field trip that are not covered by the University. Note that the increase in cost reflects budget cuts in the university. However, we are seeking supplemetary funding through Geology alumni so your cost MAY be reduced.

In addition, if you sign up for the Geologic Mapping Session or Geophysics or bothyou will need to pay for your airfare - Tampa to Salt Lake City, or Tampa to San Diego. Typically the airfare is about $400 (sometimes less). You will be responsible for your own air transportation to Salt Lake City/San Diego. If you are taking both Geologic Mapping and Field Geophysics, you must fly into Salt Lake City and arrive no later than May 11 (we leave Salt Lake early on May 12). You will drive with us from Idaho to San Diego and Baja, California. You must buy a ticket from San Diego to Tampa, leaving San Diego no earlier than the morning of June 7. If you are taking Geology Mapping but NOT Geophysics, you must fly into Salt Lake City and arrive no later than May 11, and fly out of Salt Lake City no earlier than May 24. If you are taking Field Geophysics but NOT Geologic Mapping, you must fly into San Diego and arrive no later than May 25, and fly out of San Diegono earlier than June 7.

You will spend some time away from campus. While you are away, the department will cover your lodging, but you will be responsible for purchasing meals in all three sessions. What kind of meal this is is up to you! In California and Nevada, while we are camping you will not be responsible for purchasing your own meals.

How to Enroll:

Enrollment is limited so sign up early to get the sessions you want! Here are the steps for signing up:

  • (1) Select the sessions you plan to take. READ the session descriptions so you have a good idea of the time commitment. Talk to the Faculty teaching the session if you have questions.
  • (2) See Mary Haney (Office Manager in the Geology Department (SCA 528)). She will bill your USF account to cover your share of course costs ($250 for each session you sign up for). Know the session course number you want to register for. Mary will permit you for the sessions you want. These course numbers and sections are:
    • Hydrogeology Session: GLY4947L Section 001 Hydrogeology Field Methods
    • Hydrogeology Session: GLY4948L Section 002 Hydrogeology Laboratory Methods
    • Coastal Session: GLY4947 Section 002 Coastal Geology Field Methods
    • Coastal Session: GLY4948L Section 003 Coastal Geology Laboratory Methods
    • Geologic Mapping Session: GLY 4948 Section 004 Geologic Mapping
    • Geologic Mapping Session: GLY 4949 Section 001 Computational Methods in Field Geology
    • Field Geophysics Session: GLY 4948 Section 001 Field Geophysics
    • Geologic Mapping Session: GLY 4949 Section 002 Data Analysis in Geophysics
Note: For the four main sessions (Hydro, Coastal, Geophysics and Geol Mapping) you must register for both one hour courses listed above. For example, if you plan on taking the Hydrogeology session, you must register for both GLY4947L Section 001 Hydrogeology Field Methods and GLY4948L Section 002 Hydrogeology Laboratory Methods. Note: Although students are encouraged to sign up for all sessions, you have the option of signing up for one or more. If you enroll in all three 2hr sessions, you fulfill six hrs of your Practical and Applied Geology requirement and fulfill six hours of your university summer session requirement.
